The von Willebrand factor is a globulin that is normally present in plasma and is necessary
for platelet adhesion. It is missing in von Willebrand's disease in addition to the missing
factor VIII. Ristocetin is a chemical capable of causing platelets to aggregate. Platelets from
patients with von Willebrand's disease do not respond to ristocetin.
